ChatGPT Ads for Schools: What We Know, What We Don't, and What to Check First
ChatGPT Ads have arrived in Europe
OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Ads to 31 European markets in late August 2026, its largest rollout to date. Ads appear for users on the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts stay ad-free.
The business behind this has scaled fast. OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads reached $1 billion in annualised revenue run rate in under 200 days, with tens of thousands of advertisers already using the platform.
For international schools, this the moment advertising inside an AI conversation stops being a US pilot and becomes something a European marketing team can actually buy.
Why international schools should pay attention
ChatGPT now has more than one billion weekly active users. In an August 2026 briefing reported by Adweek, OpenAI said around 20% of that base shows commercial intent.
Separately, McKinsey's AI Discovery Survey found that 44% of AI-search users describe it as their primary and preferred source of information, ahead of traditional search at 31%.
Worth flagging: that survey covered US consumers, not international-school parents, so it's a signal about search behaviour generally, not evidence of how families research schools.
Neither figure is education-specific. What they show is a shift in where people look for information. That's worth a school's attention before it's worth a school's budget.
What's actually different about advertising inside ChatGPT
Google Ads monetises a query, a handful of words typed into a box. ChatGPT advertising sits inside something closer to a conversation, with context, constraints and decision intent already expressed.
A relocating parent might ask something like: "What are the best IB schools near Munich for a 12-year-old moving from Singapore?" That single message carries curriculum preference, age, location and relocation status, all before any advertiser is involved.
If this model works, the meaningful change isn't that there's a new ad inventory. It's that advertising may be moving upstream, into the moment a family is still forming its shortlist, rather than waiting for them to search a school's name.
Whether schools can actually target, measure and justify spend against that moment is the open question. It's a hypothesis worth testing, not a promise worth buying into.
An ad is not a ChatGPT recommendation
This distinction matters more than it first appears. OpenAI is explicit that ads are separate from ChatGPT's answers, don't influence what ChatGPT recommends, and don't imply OpenAI's endorsement of the advertiser.
So when a parent asks "which international schools should I consider in Paris?", there are two separate visibility battles:
Earned visibility : does the school appear in ChatGPT's actual answer or recommendation?
Paid visibility : does the school get advertising exposure alongside that conversation?
A school cannot buy its way into ChatGPT's recommendation. It can potentially buy visibility around the conversation. Those are different propositions, and conflating them risks both wasted budget and misplaced expectations about what GEO work already does.
Worth noting too: OpenAI says it doesn't show ads to accounts identified as belonging to under-18s, and that advertisers don't receive users' conversations or personal details, only aggregated performance data. This is a channel aimed at the adult decision-maker, which is exactly where admissions marketing already sits, though it also means the rich context inside a conversation may not translate directly into advertiser targeting.
What we still don't know about ChatGPT Ads for schools
Can a school target tightly enough around its genuine enrolment catchment?
Can advertising distinguish relocation or school-search intent from general education conversation?
What ad formats and placements actually appear during a school-research journey?
What does a click cost compared with an established, high-intent Google Search campaign?
Do ChatGPT-assisted enquiries convert differently to search-assisted ones?
Can a school attribute an enquiry that began in ChatGPT and converted weeks later?
Is there enough relevant inventory in a single school's market to spend a meaningful budget?
These are the questions a Marketing Director actually needs answered before committing spend, not generic platform caveats.
Should an international school test ChatGPT Ads now?
Probably not as a replacement for existing paid search. Possibly yes as a controlled, budgeted experiment.
A school worth testing with would typically have:
established Google Ads activity already generating measurable enquiries
reliable conversion tracking already in place
enough admissions value at stake to justify experimentation
a clearly defined geographic catchment
budget explicitly set aside for testing, not expected to generate leads
someone able to compare results against existing acquisition channels
A school without reliable conversion tracking, or without a handle on its existing Google and AI visibility, has more foundational work to do before this is worth considering.
GEO, ChatGPT Ads and the emerging AI acquisition stack
It's easy to treat GEO and AI Ads as competing approaches. A more useful way to think about it is three layers:
Earned visibility : being included in the AI-generated answer itself (GEO)
Paid visibility: appearing as an advertiser around that answer or conversation (AI Ads)
Owned destination : the school website or landing page the family eventually reaches
For an international school, the acquisition strategy that eventually works will likely need all three working together, not one replacing another. If you haven't yet looked at how your school appears in AI search results, that's the more foundational starting point.
What we're testing
We're working through this directly rather than reacting to a launch announcement: how targeting actually performs, what it costs against existing channels, and whether it holds up for admissions marketing specifically. We're not presenting this as a proven channel, because it isn't yet.

FAQs
What is ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI's advertising product inside the ChatGPT app. Ads appear below responses, labelled as sponsored, for users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts remain ad-free.
Is ChatGPT Ads available in Europe yet?
Yes. OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Ads to 31 European markets in August 2026, and from 31 August advertisers in those markets can buy directly through a self-service Ads Manager rather than only through an agency.
Does advertising on ChatGPT mean a school will be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI is explicit that ads don't influence ChatGPT's answers and don't imply endorsement. A school can buy visibility around a conversation. It can't buy its way into the recommendation itself, that's a separate, earned outcome tied to GEO.
Can schools target ChatGPT ads by a specific catchment area?
Country-level targeting and custom audiences are confirmed. Whether city or postal-code level targeting is available, which most schools would need for catchment relevance, isn't confirmed either way at this stage.
Should our international school test ChatGPT Ads now?
Possibly, as a small, budgeted experiment, if you already have reliable conversion tracking and established paid search activity to compare against. It's not yet a proven replacement for existing channels.
